Cauliflower Ear
Deformed outer ear after blood collects under the cartilage
Overview
Cauliflower ear develops when a blow or repeated friction to the ear causes bleeding between the cartilage and its covering, known as an auricular hematoma. The collected blood separates the cartilage from its blood supply, and if it is not drained the cartilage can die and be replaced by thick fibrous tissue, giving the lumpy appearance. It is classically associated with wrestling, rugby, boxing, and mixed martial arts. Prompt drainage of a hematoma by a clinician is the standard approach, and protective headgear is used in many contact sports.
