Cocktail Party Effect

SciencePerception

Following one conversation among many

Overview

The brain solves the cocktail party with spatial separation, pitch and timing stream segregation, attention selection, and prediction, a feat no microphone matches. It falters with hearing loss, age, and single ears. Even normal listeners monitor background unconsciously, their own name grabs attention, the own name effect. Modeling this ability drives hearing aid design, directional beams, deep learning noise separation. For hearing impaired listeners, the fix remains partly social: round tables, good lighting, patience.
