Perilymph Fistula
An abnormal leak between the inner ear and middle ear
Overview
A perilymph fistula is an abnormal opening, usually in the oval or round window, that lets perilymph fluid leak from the inner ear into the middle ear. It can follow head trauma, barotrauma from diving or flying, heavy straining, or ear surgery. Symptoms may include fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, ear fullness, and dizziness or imbalance that can be triggered by pressure changes or loud sounds. It is difficult to confirm because no single test is definitive. Many fistulas heal with rest, and surgical patching is considered when symptoms persist.
