Captioned Telephones
Phones that display what the caller says as text
Overview
Captioned telephones show a written transcript of what the other person is saying, in near real time, while the user listens and speaks normally. The captions are generated by a relay service using communications assistants, automatic speech recognition, or a combination. They are designed mainly for people with hearing loss who can speak clearly but miss words on the phone. In the United States, internet protocol captioned telephone service is funded as a telecommunications relay service under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Captioning apps for smartphones now provide similar functions.
