CROS and BiCROS
Routing sound from a deaf ear to a hearing one
Overview
For single-sided deafness, CROS, Contralateral Routing of Signals, places a microphone on the deaf ear, wirelessly streaming to a receiver aid on the good ear. BiCROS adds amplification for the good ear when it also has loss. Benefits: awareness of sound from the deaf side, some head shadow relief. Limitations: no true localization, noise arrives from everywhere. Modern designs hide the deaf side mic in a tiny bud. Alternatives: BAHA bone conduction or cochlear implantation of the deaf ear.
